friday night at the movies

January 8th, 2009 · posted by Jean Vouté Pratt in $ $$ $$$ accessories casual clothing designers looks pants shoes tops

Movie night is a decadent experience. The popcorn, the candy, the soda, it’s pure escapism. You’ve got 2 hours to lose yourself in someone else’s story. I know the temptation is there to throw on some sweats, we’ve all done it - we’re not always on our game. However, a friday night at the movies could lead to drinks or dinner afterward. The look should be all-american with european effortlessness. A pair of slightly beaten - up boyfriend style jeans, paired with a vintage looking tee, a slouchy pair of boots, and a relaxed cashmere sweater. The look reads cool, casual, confident. You’re the girl who can hang out, be flexible, and have fun. Not only will you be comfortble watching the movie and chowing down on yummies, you’ll look at ease with yourself. There’s nothing more appealing than relaxed confidence!

canvas bags by Slow and Steady Wins the Race

December 1st, 2008 · posted by Jean Vouté Pratt in $ accessories handbags

What is Slow and Steady Wins the Race? “The mission of the label is to push and produce interesting and significant pieces from the simplest and most inexpensive fabrics and materials.” The bags are what immediately caught my eye. “The bags are based on the modern-day iconic handbag and are all executed in plain cotton muslin or canvas twill and then distilled to the sparest details of hardware and shape to identify it with its original. Through this process, the hi- fashion designer bag becomes a lo-fi object sketch and consequently an alternate icon of itself.” They still look cool, if not cooler, in a raw natural state. The bags have an understated - chic feel. It says: “I’m not trying too hard, but I still have an appreciation for design.” I applaud the effort, and would absolutely carry one of these canvas bags. Would you?

There’s a chill in the air, and you’re so tempted to throw on a fleece and a pair of Uggs. WAIT! There’s a better way to actually be cozy and look chic. It’s true! You just need to bridge the gap between comfy and sloppy. Leggings are really in fashion right now, and they happen to be pretty comfortable. Pop on a pair of dark leggings, with a knit tunic, or long somewhat fitted tee. You shouldn’t go too tight on top, you want to balance out the tight leggings on the bottom. This works as a good base, and now you can add accessories that will define the style. A pair of motorcycle boots gives the look a bit of a rugged edge. Atop the entire outfit with a long cardigan, or an unstructured coat. It should look relaxed, and easy. A scarf and a hobo bag completes the look. All the pieces in the outfit feel comfortable, but also look good pulled together. Comfort doesn’t always have to mean sweats and a tee, although I must admit I love to slip into my sweats at the end of a long day. In public, I try to keep my cozy closer to chic.

Style that looks effortless is the most intriguing style of all. By effortless, I don’t mean look like you didn’t try at all. The idea is to look pulled together without looking like you’re trying too hard. To achieve this - keep the major pieces understated, but rich in structure and design. Pay attention to the tailoring; it should fit beautifully. The Miu Miu jacket has a frilled waist which adds a feminine touch, yet it’s understated in it’s color and fabric. The beauty is in the design. Choose colors that are basic, and can mix well into your wardrobe. You want the ability to create a lot of different looks with the same pieces. An off-white silk blouse can work its way into a million different outfits. A great pair of jeans - a must- of course. Accessories can be a bit more bold, if you want to amp it up. A python bag pops perfectly on a neutral backdrop. This style is one of my favorites, people notice the woman instead of the outfit. That’s ideal!

Barabara Bui designs the type of shoes that I would wear all day, everyday… if my feet didn’t kill me. They are fantasy shoes - the type of shoes you hope you’re wearing when you run into an ex-boyfriend, and his new girlfriend. They’re sexy, make you look ten feet tall, and will certainly leave him wondering how you got away. Don’t you love a shoe that has the power to make you feel confident, self-assured, and feminine? So… what’s your fantasy shoe?

So, they’ve been around for a while and like most trends they should be on their way out, right? Wrong! Cowboy boots are not going out of style anytime soon, they have become a staple. Designers are not letting up - even European designers love the classic American boot. Now, cowboy boots are available in an array of colors and styles ranging from distressed and slouched boho-chic looks to the traditional “these will last you for 100 years” look.

So, with what can we wear these fabulous boots? Try mixing it up Sienna Miller style with a dainty, romantic sundress and fedora or take the Jessica Simpson and Carrie Underwood route with some laid back, sexy denims and a cute graphic tee. Either way you really can’t go wrong! What else do we love about cowboy boots? They’re the superwoman of transitional shoes that will help you strut your stuff into Autumn, through Winter and eventually into Spring. Giddyup!

  • the maxi: dress or glorified nightgown?

July 23rd, 2008 · posted by Jean Vouté Pratt in clothing dresses trends

We’ve all heard how popular maxi dresses are right now. Everywhere you look, people are writing about how to wear them. So, why is it that every time I try one on - I feel like I’m wearing a nightgown? It always seemed to be too much fabric for me to manage, I was practically sweeping the floor as I walked across it. At first I thought I was too short to carry off the trend, but as I watched other women wearing the maxi, I began to question who they are actually built for? They look smashing on the tall lean girls of the world, but where does that leave the rest of us? They have been promoted as the dress that is built for all body types, but we’re not convinced. I’m not completely panning the maxi dress, because it has its positives too. For starters, it’s really comfortable and easy to throw on. On the right person, it’s a seriously chic look. How many of you out there have a hard time making the maxi work? If you can make it work, please tell us how. Send us a photo of yourself making maxi magic, and you could be the topic of a post!

    how to wear gladiator sandals

April 2nd, 2008 · posted by Jean Vouté Pratt in $ $$ $$$ Adam Lippes Giuseppe Zanotti Sam Edelman Sigerson Morrison Tibi accessories clothing coats dresses shoes trends

This isn’t exactly ancient Rome, although sometimes our lives can seem like a battle in the gladiatorial games. Lucky for us, this season we can actually dress for it. As you may already know, gladiator sandals are a big trend this season. Like a lot of things lately, the ancient sandal has been modernized. It now comes in all shapes and sizes, and is accessible to more women. Gladiator sandals can be tricky for some. The question “what would I wear them with?” is on the minds of a lot of women. We have picked a few of our favorite styles and put together some outfit ideas. For instance, a simple gold gladiator can take a gold shimmery evening dress from ultra formal to ultra fabulous. It’s a look that can easily be worn to a cocktail party on the beach. The classic brown leather gladiator looks great with a white cotton summer dress. It’s a “bohemian meets roman goddess” look that is perfect for running around on a hot summer day. The snakeskin gladiator is another style that we love. This one is perfect for casual chic days, or casual fridays at work. It’s a more sophisticated gladiator, and can easily be dressed up or down. You can pair it with white jeans, slacks, or shorts. Finally, the high leg gladiator. Keep it simple on top with this style. Let the sandal be the focus. We’ve paired it with a basic black summer dress, which works for day or night. The high leg gladiator sandal is the riskiest of the styles we’ve selected. It makes more of a statement than the other styles. Hopefully, this will help you pull your gladiator together. What makes women crazier than Russell Crowe portraying a sweaty, muscular, man of honor? Well, shoes of course.
