argyle tights for girls under 30

November 7th, 2008 · posted by Jean Vouté Pratt in $ prints/patterns trends

Carrie Bradshaw is practically the only girl over thirty who can wear argyle thigh highs, and I’m not convinced she didn’t look a little silly. The under 30’s have a much better chance of pulling off this look. It’s young, collegiate, and a bit Gossip Girl. When we hit 30, we should try to move away from school-girl fashions. It’s time to hone in on a new look, a more sophisticated look. If you’re in your twenties, you can rock this look. I’ve loved the look of thigh-highs ever since Alicia Silverstone pranced around Beverly Hills wearing them in Clueless. Paired with a pleated skirt or a sweater dress, it’s naughty meets nice. It’s a playful style, but maintain an innocence about it. Stay away from looking like a playmate.

Have you been sensing the onset of the chilly season to come as the sun begins to set earlier and earlier? Do you envision the Autumn leaves falling and the freezing snowmen being built in your front yard? That is the time of year when we find ourselves yearning for colorful things, for Spring to arrive. We are used to associating flowers and floral patterns with Springtime, and lucky for us this year the colorful pattern is going to be blooming throughout the chilly winter. Keep in mind, the winter florals are different than the florals we see in Spring. They are rich and deep in both color and texture. So, don’t think you can grab last seasons cotton dress pair it with tights and get away with it. This isn’t a trend to go over-board with. It’s probably wise to work one piece into your winter wardrobe, so you don’t look like an overgrown garden!

  • style observed: plaid

September 3rd, 2008 · posted by Ellie Jabbour in clothing dresses looks prints/patterns style observerd trends uncategorized

Plaid can be bold, rough and grungy, but we’ve found real life women who have dared to wear the look with grace.

New York women have decided: they love the plaid mini dress. And it’s the perfect item to take you from Summer to Fall. The women above pair these cute, breezy dresses with light heels and sandals, but these plaid pieces can easily be transitioned into Fall. On the left, the woman daringly pairs her yellow and black plaid with punchy colors to play up the summery nature of yellow, but this can easily be matched with darker colors for fall to create a completely different look. The woman on the right wears a dress with a flirty back cutout that can be warmed up with a shrug for fall. This simple dress shape proves to be an easy way to wear a daring print.

Of course, plaid can easily go awry. On the left is a classic example of ill-fitting plaid. These lines in the print are no longer straight; they are following every single curve of the woman’s body, which isn’t flattering. While plaid should be tailored, it should never be skintight! The woman in the middle pairs plaid shorts with a print top, which makes the outfit way too busy. Though a careful mixing of prints can sometimes be genius, this looks messy and unplanned. While this last outfit on the right may be stylish in the moment, lets be realistic: I don’t care how trendy maxi dresses or plaid are, in a few months this woman will be sure to look in her closet and wonder why she ever wore that much baggy plaid at once.

Ed Hardy for your inner wild side

What happens when the “Godfather of the modern tattoo” teams up with “the king of jeans”? An original, artistic clothing line is born. In January 2005, Christian Audigler and Ed Hardy joined forces and created one of the hottest brands on the market today. Celebs like Madonna, Britney, and Snoop Dogg were immediately drawn to the edgy artistic collection.
Ed Hardy’s passion for tattoo artistry started when he was just a young boy. When he was 10 years old he would draw cars and eagles on the back of his friend’s arms with an eyeliner pencil. Whether you like it or not, Ed Hardy is an artist. Some shy away from tattoo art because it can seem a bit “biker” meets “punk” with the skulls, hearts and banners announcing “love kills slowly”. However, Ed Hardy’s collection brings an appreciation for tattoo art to the masses - without having to fully commit to a lifelong body tattoo. Now, we can change our tattoo with our mood, wear a different one everyday. These colorful Japanese art-inspired clothes will always look best with dark jeans. Keep it simple by only showcasing one item at a time - don’t overdo it. It’s a sexy, rock and roll chic look - go for it.
