the september issue
On this rain soaked day, my sister and I snuck off to the movies to see The September Issue. The über fabulous Anna Wintour gives us a taste of what goes into producing an issue of Vogue. Anna Wintour, if you don’t already know, is the editor-in-chief of American Vogue. It has been said that Anna is the most powerful woman in fashion, and that is quite obvious in the movie. Designers were actually getting nervous in her presence, trying to please her. She certainly isn’t a warm person, and she makes no apologies about it. However, she’s not nearly the cold bitch that we’ve all read about. She’s a business woman, in a powerful position, who makes the hard decisions for the success of the magazine. She’s not really moved by hurt feelings or bruised egos. Quite frankly, she shouldn’t be. She gets the job done, and she’s the best at it. How many men do you know who would consider someone’s feelings in business?
The only one who doesn’t back down from Anna is Grace Coddington. Grace has been the creative Director since 1995, but has been in the business for over 20 years. She will make you smile in this movie, she’s a tough cookie!
Having said all that, I left the movie feeling a little deflated. I wanted to be jealous of Anna Wintour’s life. I wanted her to be unbelievably glamorous, and I wanted everyone who worked for her to look like they stepped right out of the magazine. Truthfully, I wanted to see the real version of The Devil Wears Prada. It wasn’t. Actually, Anna was quite glamorous. She was dressed beautifully for work, which is much more than I can say for her staff. The movie shows you what hard work it is to pull an issue together, and how truly busy this one woman is. You will definitely get a kick out André Leon Talley. André is the editor-at-large for Vogue. He’s fun, extravagant, exactly what we all want him to be!
I will say, I have so much more respect for what her job entails then I did before watching the movie. I see Vogue in an entirely new way. It’s actually much more about the art of fashion than about style. It’s crafted and laid out so brilliantly, it’s fantastical. If only they could lose 60% of the ads, it would be perfect. If you have any interest in the Fashion business, it’s a must see!! xoxo
