how to rationalize an unnecessary boot buy

There are plenty of days when I walk through stores to get a feel for what is out there. I don’t intend to purchase anything, just to gather information on product. However, there are days when I come across an item that I simply can’t pass up. Although, I desperately try to avoid that situation. For example, If I see a shoe I like, I try it on hoping that it’s impossible to walk in or brutally uncomfortable.
Cut to the other day in Nordstrom’s:
“Excuse me, can I try these on in a 71/2 or 8?”
“Sure” he said rushing off to the stock room.
He quickly came back with a stack of boxes.
“Try the 8 first, this boot has been running small.”
I was relieved, because I thought that meant they wouldn’t fit well. Phew!
As soon as I pulled them on I knew I was in trouble. I LOVED them, and he knew it.
“Shall I put them on your Nordstrom’s card?” He said confidently.
I could feel my mind going into overdrive. Could I rationalize the purchase in the next 3 seconds?
“No, I don’t have a Nordstrom’s card” I said trying to buy time to think about it.
“Oh, on your Visa then?”
“Yes, I’ll take them!” I said quickly hoping to convince myself.
As I walked up to the counter it suddenly crept up on me. Do I really NEED these boots? Uh oh, panic!
“Wait!” I blurted out.
“I’m actually going to think about them some more. I’ll be back”
I actually didn’t think I would be back anytime soon. As I went to leave the store, it was pouring outside. A light went off in my head. It’s a sign!! I should go back and get the boots. That’s when I start to rationalize the purchase…
It usually goes something like this:
- I mean, they aren’t even that expensive.
- I will wear them with everything, especially since rocker chic is big this season.
- I haven’t really bought anything since I moved here.
- I haven’t paid a babysitter since I’ve moved here. Huge savings right there!
- If I don’t get them, I know I’ll wish I had.
- Ok … so I won’t order out for the next week.
- My kids love hot dogs anyway.
- I’ll actually be helping the economy!
- I can always return them.

Love how you think! And I love the boots! We all finds ways to rationalize our purchases. When it comes to shoes, I've realized I have no willpower at all. Which means, I have to stay away altogether from my favorite shoe boutiques in town. I treat myself to new shoes when I travel. That is a bit easier to justify … can you hear me now … “but honey, I wouldn't be able to find these anywhere.” Enjoy living in Dallas. My parents (moved there 9 years ago) and one of my sisters (moved there in January) love Dallas.
You did the right thing.
This time, I believe I did! Although… I have to walk really slow in them. LOL
LOL Jean – a girl after my own heart
Those boots are gorgeous! I love Ash boots, they are so well made and manage to be classics and edgy at once!
I do Exactly the same thing. I walk into shops hoping I WONT find anything I really like and say phew! I just saved x amount of money. But looking at those boots I can see what the problem was, they look great.
UGH – isn't it the worst! So many nice things out there. It's hard to make it out of the store without breaking the bank. WILLPOWER!!!
I love the boots but, when I looked them up to BUY the shaft looked much shorter than the pair you have on. Is there another place where I can find them that go to the knee like yours?
They don't have them online. You have to go into Nordstroms. If they don't have them – they can locate them for you.
