Halston resurrected?
When I was a little girl, I used to love my Madame Alexander dolls. I can remember when Madame Alexander died, my sisters and I were devastated. We hoped the dolls would still be made as well, but they simply weren’t. The faces never looked right, and the quality was never fully achieved. Sometimes, it’s the same with designers.
Roy Halston Frowlich of Halston, first started out as a milliner designing hats for Bergdorff Goodman. He caught a big break when he designed a pillbox hat for, none other than, Jackie Kennedy. He quickly moved into designing women’s wear. His designs were embraced by celebrities like Bianca Jagger, Liza Minelli, and Elizabeth Taylor. He captured a style that was luxurious but minimalist. The fabrics he used were rich, but constructed with ease. On any given night in the 70′s, you would see someone famous partying at Studio 54 wearing a Halston. It was pure sex appeal, and brilliant for the lifestyle.
In 1973 he sold his label, and ten years later was fired from the company. Designer, after designer tried to recreate what Halston did so well. They all failed. Can a designer’s vision be brought out by someone else? Or does the brand basically die when the designer leaves? Has the Versace label changed since the death of Gianni? Consider Herve Leger, has Max Azria done his label justice? Are the dresses as good as they were when Herve was the creative hand? Marios Schwab is the head designer desperately trying to resurrect the Halston brand. Has he done it? Are the pieces as sensual as the original Halston? Or is it just another failed attempt?
