why I still don’t like the maxi dress…

the maxi dress

The Maxi dress is still going strong this Summer. I’ve tried very hard to embrace this trend, but I can’t wrapped my arms around it. I still think it looks like a glorified nightgown. To be fair, I’ve seen a few women do it well. The women who wore it well had a few things in common. They wore it in the appropriate setting, at the appropriate length, and in a flattering cut. The ideal length for a maxi is just above the ankle. If you wear it longer than that, it will swallow you. Choose a cut that works well for your body. For example, if you’re petite the dress should be more fitted.

Where to wear it:

  1. The Beach
  2. Tropical resort
  3. Summer Vacation spot
  4. Backyard BBQ

I like it SO MUCH! It's very Austin – I see it a lot here, especially on the college girls.

It covers a multitude of sins. Even though I am tall, it doesn't look very good on me, alas. I'm too short-waisted and curvy. I look pregnant, or my chest hangs out in a trashy way. Maybe my perfect maxi dress is out there, but I am content to admire this trend from afar.

Thank Goodness – it sounds like Austin girls are doing it right! I hear you about feeling like you look pregnant in it… I feel the same. I guess I see SO MANY NYC girls getting it wrong that I'm jaded. Glad to know TX girls get it!

I still don't know. I did see one in a rich, gorgeous blue that I thought looked lovely… on the store mannequin. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't translate well in real life, especially if worn by someone as curvy as I am :-)

I think I'm too petite (five feet) to wear this. I would look like a child.

I'm not “SOLD” yet on the Maxi dress! I agree with most comments that say you appear fat, pregnant etc…. I saw one that was tapered and could work…But there were 20 of the same dress hanging on the rack….No way!!

I have to say, I love them. But I do agree with being occasion appropriate! I will be rocking one to a beachside wedding rehearsal dinner.

I'm 5'4 – and always feel like it's tenting me. So, I hear you! Although, I'll bet you look great in a mini!

I love them. I am 5' 8″ and over 30. I wouldn't be caught dead in a mini, so this is perfect.

I love them. I’m an American Muslim so it’s great to find clothes in actual stores (instead of only shopping online) that I can wear. I’m 5’2″ so they may swallow me, but I wear maxi skirts or dresses almost daily in the summer and get nothing but compliments. I also wear them floor length because I hate for my ankle to show. To me a short maxi dress or skirt (above the shoes) seems the same as wearing jeans that are obviously too short. *ick*
