what’s going on at The GAP?

For the past few seasons I’ve walked through the doors at The Gap and felt pleasantly surprised. I was excited that they were finally starting to get it. Their pieces were classic while still managing to stay on trend. This season, I’m sadly disappointed. The colors for summer are dark and drab. The styles are back to boxy, and border on androgynous. Why? … I had just been to the Gap in April and the clothes were looking so good. The palette was pleasing, the styles were feminine, and the textures were soft. How did they go from that to dark purple and red plaid? I love the Gap, and usually find at least a couple of things, but this time I walked out empty handed. I spent a little time on their website today, and I was actually able to find a few things that could speak to us all. Let’s hope this is just the pre-season lull, and that they will be back on track soon. Come on Gap, we know you have it in you! You should represent the essence of American style.

Gap items that we observed and spoke to us (clockwise):

  • Patchwork shirt by Band of Outsiders
  • Tropical-print tunic top
  • Satin-sash dress
  • Tie-shoulder dress
  • Ankle-strap flats
  • Long tiered sundress
  • Essential keyhole one-piece
  • Canvas/lambskin satchel
  • Clean cropped pants
  • Quilted cropped blazer
  • Satin-placket cami

I have been more and more disappointed with the Gap with every season. I used to really count on them for basics with a little bit of trendy fun and now it seems that they are just all over the place and definitely not doing the classics like they used to. Also, it seems like the quality has really gone downhill. It seems harder and harder to find stores where you can get reasonably priced items that are classic with a flair! I’m definitely not ready for Talbots yet!!!

I agree, and it’s so disappointing. If you find that place that has reasonably priced basics & classics please let me know!

Believe it or not, I have gone to LLBean for basics and had pretty good luck. They have a great stretch bootcut jean that is great for everyday because it is not low cut and so you can move around without hiking your pants up every 2 seconds. They also fit us girls with curves, which is always a bonus.

I have found some fun summer tops from the RED collection. I also go to J. Crew for summer basics. Not a fan of the purple in Gap right now.

      J. Crew does have some nice things this season. I’m not a fan of the purple or the plaid. It just seems so heavy for summer.

Totally agree! I have been feeling that way for awhile. I completely stopped going to the Gap a few seasons ago because it seemed like the only thing they were carrying was was t-shirts and jeans. These, of course, I love…but I used to always find fun and funky coordinates to pair up with the rest of my wardrobe.
